AI Mode SEO: how to get cited in Google AI Mode
AI Mode SEO is getting your pages cited, and your brand named, in Google AI Mode, the chat-style tab in Google Search. Google says there are no extra requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. AI Mode runs many searches per question, so pages that answer the follow-ups get read.
Picked is an AI visibility tool for SEO and marketing agencies, and B2B SaaS teams. Every day it asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers the prompts your buyers ask, records which brands and pages they name, and writes the article built to become the source they quote.

The basics
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a tab in Google Search where you ask a question in full sentences, get a written answer with links, and ask follow-ups in the same thread. It's separate from AI Overviews, the summaries shown on top of an ordinary results page.
Both come from the same Google index. They don't give the same answer.
AI Mode vs AI Overviews
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
Where
- AI Overviews
- On top of a normal results page, for some searches
- AI Mode
- Its own tab; the whole page is the answer
The question
- AI Overviews
- A search someone typed
- AI Mode
- Often longer, with follow-ups in a thread
The page
- AI Overviews
- The summary, then the usual results under it
- AI Mode
- The answer is the page
In Search Console
- AI Overviews
- Counted in the Performance report under "Web"
- AI Mode
- Also counted under "Web"
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | On top of a normal results page, for some searches | Its own tab; the whole page is the answer |
| The question | A search someone typed | Often longer, with follow-ups in a thread |
| The page | The summary, then the usual results under it | The answer is the page |
| In Search Console | Counted in the Performance report under "Web" | Also counted under "Web" |
We asked both the same 5 buyer questions for Leado, a Reddit lead-generation tool we run, on September 27 and 28, 2026, US:
31
Pages AI Mode cited
9
Of those, also cited in the AI Overview for the same search
77
Brands AI Mode named
16
Of those, also named in the AI Overview
3.1
Links per AI Mode answer
7.7
Brands named per AI Mode answer
Same index, same searches, same day, and most of what AI Mode cited and named wasn't in the AI Overview. Winning one doesn't mean you're in the other. It's a small sample from one product, so check your own searches; the AI Overview tracker page covers the other side.

llms.txt is not a strategy.
Query fan-out
How does AI Mode choose its sources?
Through query fan-out. Google's guide to its generative AI features (published May 15, 2026, updated July 10) describes it as related queries the model runs at the same time "to request more information and fetch additional relevant search results". A question like "best CRM for a small agency" can turn into searches for pricing, integrations, alternatives and reviews, each with its own results.
What that means for your pages:
The question's own ranking isn't the whole game
A page can be read for one of the fan-out searches without ranking for the question typed.
Follow-ups matter
Pages that cover the questions a buyer asks next (price, limits, alternatives, who it's for) match more of those searches.
Comparisons get read
Several of the fan-out searches for a buying question are comparisons. Being on the pages that compare your category puts you in front of more of them.
Google's myths
What does Google say you don't need?
Google's guide has a section on myths, and it's worth reading before you buy anything sold as "AI Mode optimization". According to the guide:
llms.txt"Google Search itself doesn't use them." It will neither help nor harm your visibility.
Chunking
"There's no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it."
Rewriting for AI
the models understand synonyms and meaning; you don't need keyword variations or special formatting.
Structured data
not required for AI features, though still worth using for rich results.
Mentions
"seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem."
llms.txt is not a strategy, at least not for Google: it takes ten minutes to add and Google says Search doesn't read it. Spend the time on the pages AI Mode quotes. The guide's own summary: optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, "and thus still SEO".
What to change
How do I get my site cited in Google AI Mode?
No one can make AI Mode cite you. These steps give Google's systems reasons to.
- 1
Be indexed and snippet-eligible
It's Google's only stated requirement. Check that
noindex,nosnippet,data-nosnippetor a smallmax-snippetaren't set on pages you want cited. - 2
Write what only you can write
Google's guide asks for "unique expert or experienced takes that go beyond common knowledge". Your prices, your test results, your customers' real questions. A page anyone could have written is one AI Mode can get from anyone.
- 3
Answer the question in the first sentence
, then the follow-ups on the same page, each under its own heading.
- 4
Cover the comparison
An honest "X vs Y" or "best X for Y" page that names the options, you included, matches the fan-out searches a buying question triggers.
- 5
Get onto the pages that compare your category
AI Mode named 7.7 brands per answer in our data. Brands get named when the pages Google reads name them.
- 6
Keep pages fresh and dated
When prices or features change, update the page and the date on it.
Measure it
How do I track AI Mode?
Search Console won't separate it: Google counts AI Mode inside the "Web" search type. To see what AI Mode says, run your buyers' questions in the AI Mode tab, on several days, and note the links and brands.
To do that every day, an AI visibility tool records the answer for you. Picked reads AI Mode from Google's own results, US, for each of your prompts, and shows who it named, which pages it cited, and how that compares with AI Overviews, ChatGPT and the rest. AI Mode can be one of your AI models on any plan (see pricing).
When not to bother
When AI Mode SEO won't help
Honest answer: sometimes this isn't worth your time.
Your pages aren't indexed
AI Mode reads Google's index. Fix indexing first; every other step depends on it.
Your buyers don't search Google for this
Some categories are bought by phone, referral or a trade directory. Track before you invest.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Short answers, each one checked against the vendor's own docs or our own answers.
AI Overviews are summaries on top of a normal Google results page. AI Mode is a separate tab where the answer is the whole page and you can ask follow-ups. Both use Google's index and query fan-out, but in our data most pages AI Mode cited weren't in the AI Overview for the same search.
Yes, mixed in. Google counts AI Mode, like AI Overviews, in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type. There's no separate AI Mode filter, so Search Console can't show which answers named or cited you.
No. Google's guide to its generative AI features says Google Search doesn't use llms.txt, and that it will neither help nor harm your visibility. You don't need special files or markup to appear in AI Mode.
Query fan-out is how AI Mode and AI Overviews gather sources: the model runs several related searches at the same time, on subtopics of the question, and reads results from each. A page can be cited because it matched one of those searches, even if it doesn't rank for the question typed.
There's no separate ranking to climb. Make sure your pages are indexed and snippet-eligible, answer each buying question and its follow-ups clearly, publish what only you know, and get onto the comparison pages for your category. Then measure which answers cite you, since they change.
