AI Overview tracker: see when Google's AI Overviews cite you

An AI Overview tracker records, for the searches you care about, whether Google shows an AI Overview, which pages it cites and which brands it names, every day. Search Console can't tell you: Google counts AI Overview clicks and impressions inside the ordinary Web results, with no separate report.

Picked is an AI visibility tool for SEO and marketing agencies, and B2B SaaS teams. Every day it asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers the prompts your buyers ask, records which brands and pages they name, and writes the article built to become the source they quote.

What it records

What does an AI Overview tracker measure?

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google shows above the results for some searches, with links to the pages they drew on. A tracker runs your list of searches on a schedule, from the country you sell in, and records what each AI Overview said.

  • Whether an AI Overview appeared

Google shows one for some searches and not others, and it changes
  • The pages cited, in order

These are the sources Google trusted for the answer. Yours, or someone else's
  • The brands named

A buying search can name five products without linking any of them
  • Your position when named

First named and fourth named aren't the same result
  • The same, day after day

One check is an anecdote. The share over weeks is a number you can report

A rank tracker with an "AI Overview present" checkbox covers the first row. The rest is what tells you whether you're winning the answer.

Search Console

Why isn't Search Console an AI Overview tracker?

Google counts AI Overview traffic in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type, together with ordinary results, according to Google's page on AI features (updated December 10, 2025). There's no filter for "shown in an AI Overview".

So Search Console can show that a page got clicks, but not whether those came from the AI Overview or the blue link under it. It also can't tell you who the AI Overview named when it didn't name you, or which competitor's page it cited instead. That needs the answer itself, which is what a tracker saves.

An AI Overview screenshot is an anecdote, not a metric.

Our data

What do AI Overviews cite?

We recorded AI Overviews for 10 buyer questions from two products we run, LaunchOnIt (a launch platform) and Leado (a Reddit lead-generation tool), on September 27 and 28, 2026, US: 20 AI Overviews. Every one of the 10 questions got an AI Overview on both days.

  • 13 of 51

  • 11 of 70

    Links to YouTube, Leado's questions

Two things stood out against the other AI models we read for the same questions.

  1. AI Overviews link forums and video

For LaunchOnIt's questions, AI Overviews linked Reddit 13 times in 51 links; ChatGPT linked it twice in 80 and Perplexity not once in 201. AI Overviews also linked YouTube 11 times for Leado; no other model linked YouTube at all. Google draws on its own index, and that index ranks threads and videos for buying questions.

  2. Lists and brand sites split the rest

About four links in ten went to the named brands' own sites, and four in ten to "best X" and comparison pages.

A small sample from two niches, so read it as what happened there.

How do I track AI Overviews for free?

Search your questions in a private window, from the country you sell in, and note whether an AI Overview appears, who it names and which pages it links. Do it on several days, since the answer changes. A spreadsheet with one row per search per day works for ten searches.

It stops working past that, or when you need it for a client every week. That's the point of a tracker.

How Picked tracks

How does Picked track AI Overviews?

Picked is an AI visibility tool: it asks your prompts every day and records the answer from Google's results page, US, with the AI Overview loaded. For each search you see:

  • whether there was an AI Overview, and its full text;
  • the pages it cited, and whether yours was one of them;
  • the brands it named, your position, and the competitors named instead;
  • how that changes over weeks, next to the same prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Mode.

Starter starts with ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, and every plan can include them. When you lose a search, Picked lists the pages Google cited instead of yours, and on Growth and Scale Picked writes the article to go after it. To see a first answer now, the free AI visibility checker asks Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT two of your buyers' questions.

Getting cited

How do I get cited in AI Overviews?

Google says there are no extra requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and "you don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup". What moves the answer is the ordinary work, pointed at the right questions.

  1. 1

    Be indexed, with snippets allowed

nosnippet, data-nosnippet and a small max-snippet limit what AI Overviews can use from your page. Check you haven't set them by accident.

  2. 2

Answer the search in your first sentence

AI Overviews summarize. A page whose opening line answers the question gives Google a sentence to use.

  3. 3

Cover the searches around the question

Google runs several related searches (it calls this query fan-out) to build an AI Overview. A page that answers the follow-ups (price, alternatives, who it's for) gets read for more of them.

  4. 4

Be where the brands are compared

Four links in ten went to list and comparison pages in our data. If you're not on them, Google has no reason to name you.

  5. 5

Use the formats Google already ranks for your search

If AI Overviews for your questions link Reddit threads and YouTube videos, that's where the conversation is. Take part in it honestly; don't fake it.

When not to bother

When you don't need a tracker

Honest answer: sometimes this isn't worth your time.

  • Your searches don't show AI Overviews

Check a handful first. If none of your buyers' searches trigger one, track rankings instead.

  • You need it once

Search it yourself. A tracker earns its keep when you need the same answer every day, for months, or for a client report.

A tool that runs your searches on Google every day and records whether an AI Overview appeared, which pages it cited and which brands it named. It shows how often you're in the answer over time, which Search Console can't, since Google counts AI Overview traffic inside ordinary web results.

Only mixed in. Google counts AI Overview clicks and impressions in the Performance report under the Web search type, together with ordinary results. There's no filter for AI Overviews, and it doesn't show who the AI Overview named or cited instead of you.

Search your buyers' questions in a private window from the country you sell in and look at the links in the AI Overview. Repeat on several days, since the answer changes. For more than a handful of searches, an AI Overview tracker does the same thing daily and keeps the history.

There's no separate ranking. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, nothing more. Pages get cited when they answer the search and its follow-ups clearly, and brands get named when the pages Google reads compare them. Start with your first sentence and the lists you're missing from.

Google decides per search whether to show an AI Overview. Every one of the 10 buying questions we tracked got an AI Overview on both days. Check your own searches before paying to track them.

No. AI Overviews sit on top of a normal results page; AI Mode is a separate chat-style tab in Google Search. Both use Google's index and query fan-out, but they answer differently: in our data, AI Mode cited 31 pages and only 9 of them were in the AI Overview for the same search that day.
