AEO vs SEO: what you add, what you keep, what to change first
SEO gets a page ranked in Google's list of results. AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your brand named and your page cited inside the answer an AI model writes, in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. AEO is not a replacement for SEO: the pages AI answers read are found by crawlers and search indexes, so the SEO work stays, and AEO adds a second thing to check.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO is judged by where a page ranks. AEO is judged by whether an answer uses it.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you want | Position 1 to 10 for a search, and the click | Your brand named in the answer, your page in its sources |
| Who chooses | A ranking algorithm, for the words typed | A model, which runs its own searches, reads a few pages and writes one answer |
| What the page needs | Relevance, links, a page that loads and is indexed | The same, plus the answer stated in a sentence that can be quoted alone |
| How you check | Search Console, a rank tracker | Ask the questions your buyers ask, on each AI model, on a schedule, and count |
| How stable it is | Moves over days and weeks | The same question can get a different answer on the next run |
| What it costs to check | Free to cheap | Cheapest paid trackers ran from $29 to $599 a month on October 10, 2026 (compared here) |
The two scoreboards disagree more than you'd expect. When we asked 30 buyer questions in ChatGPT and in Google, 2 of the 87 pages ChatGPT cited were in Google's top 10 for the same question. The full run is in GEO vs SEO. A top ranking told us almost nothing about whether ChatGPT would quote the page.
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
Mostly it's SEO with a second goal. Google's own guide to its generative AI features says the advice for AI Overviews and AI Mode is the same as for search: it's still SEO. No special file, no rewriting content for AI.
What AEO adds is narrower than the hype. Four things:
- A quotable line at the top of each section. An answer pulls the sentence that answers the question. If the answer is in the fifth paragraph, the model quotes someone else's first line.
- Facts a model can lift. Prices, limits, dates, measured results, in plain HTML and in tables. A model citing a source needs something specific to cite.
- Pages for the questions buyers ask a model. In our run, 18 of ChatGPT's 87 citations were pricing pages. Comparisons, "X vs Y" and "best X" pages fill most of the rest.
- A measurement you run separately. SEO tools won't show whether ChatGPT names you. You have to ask.
What do you keep from SEO?
Everything that gets a page into any index.
- It can be crawled and indexed. By Googlebot, and by the AI companies' search crawlers. OpenAI's crawler docs say
OAI-SearchBotdecides whether a page can appear in ChatGPT's search answers. Blocking it in robots.txt takes you out of those answers. - The facts are in the HTML. OpenAI's and Anthropic's crawlers download JavaScript files but don't run them, according to Vercel's crawler data (December 2024). A price that only appears after scripts run doesn't exist for them.
- Other sites mention you. The "best X" lists, directories and reviews that AI answers read are the same places SEO has always chased links from.
What should you change first?
The full version of these steps, with the data behind each, is in AI search optimization: how to do it, in 8 steps.
If you only have an hour, in this order:
- Check robots.txt. Make sure
OAI-SearchBot,Claude-SearchBot,PerplexityBotandGooglebotaren't blocked on pages you want cited. - View the page without JavaScript. If the price, the table or the answer is missing, move it into the HTML.
- Put the answer first. For each page that targets a question, write the answer in one sentence directly under the heading, then the detail.
- Add one comparison table to each page where a buyer would compare options. Answer engines lift real HTML tables.
- Ask the question yourself. Type your five most important buyer questions into ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and write down who is named and which pages are cited. Repeat weekly.
- Use a tool when five prompts become fifty. Counting by hand stops working at that point. The tools differ in which models they read and how often, so compare them on that, not on the feature list.
How do you measure AEO next to SEO?
Keep both scoreboards and don't mix them. SEO stays in Search Console and your rank tracker: impressions, position, clicks. AEO needs its own count, because those tools don't show whether an AI answer names you.
- Share of answers that name you. Run your buyer questions on each AI model, on a schedule, and divide the answers that name your brand by all the answers. Answers change run to run, so read the trend over weeks, not one run.
- Which pages get cited. The cited page is often not the page that ranks. In our 30 questions, 2 of 87 cited pages were in Google's top 10.
- Visits from AI answers. ChatGPT tags its source links with
utm_source=chatgpt.com(all 87 in our run), so you can filter those visits in your analytics. Some AI apps send no referrer, and their visits land in "Direct".
When should you put AEO first, SEO first, or both?
Start from the question your buyer types.
- AEO first for questions that ask a model to choose or compare: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", pricing and limits. In our run, 18 of ChatGPT's 87 citations were pricing pages.
- SEO first when the buyer already knows the name, searches for a place, or the page has to be indexed before anything can cite it. A local trade is the clearest case.
- Both, on the same page, for most B2B pages: answer the question in the first line, keep the page crawlable and fast, and add the facts a model can quote. That's the page that can rank and be cited.
Which word do you use: AEO, GEO or SEO?
They name overlapping jobs. AEO began with featured snippets and voice answers, then took on AI answers. GEO (generative engine optimization) was coined for AI-written answers, in a 2023 research paper (what GEO is and where the term comes from). Today agencies use whichever label their client recognises. The practical difference between GEO and SEO is covered in GEO vs SEO, and the software sold under these labels in the best AEO tools.
When isn't AEO worth your time?
When the SEO basics aren't done. If your pages aren't indexed, load slowly or answer nothing clearly, fix that first. It helps both scoreboards.
When your buyers don't ask AI. A local trade where everyone phones for a quote gets more from Google Business Profile than from ChatGPT.
When you want a guarantee. Nobody controls what a model says tomorrow, and answers change run to run. Anyone promising "rank #1 in ChatGPT" is guessing with your money.
How we checked
- Search results: Google US on October 11, 2026, for "aeo vs seo", read through cloro. Nine organic results; five came from software or platform vendors (Optimizely, Siteimprove, HubSpot, Semrush, WP VIP).
- Volume: 1,900 searches a month, difficulty 17, DataForSEO Labs, US, October 2026.
- 30-question comparison: run September 30, 2026, method and limits in GEO vs SEO.
- Tool prices: vendors' own pages, October 10, 2026, in the AEO tools comparison.
- Not tested: whether the changes above raise a page's citations. They follow the sources linked; we haven't run a controlled test.
If you want the answer-side numbers for your own brand, that's what an AI visibility tool is for. Picked asks your buyers' questions every day on the AI models in your plan (Claude less often), shows which pages each answer cited, and writes the article for a question you lose. To see where you stand first, run the free AI visibility checker.
Frequently asked questions
What is AEO similar to SEO?
Both make a page easier to find and use when someone asks a question. They share the basics: a page that can be crawled and indexed, content that answers the question, and mentions from other sites. They differ in the result: a ranking for SEO, a named brand and a cited page inside an AI answer for AEO.
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cite indexed pages, and ChatGPT reads pages its crawler can find. What changed is that ranking alone doesn't tell you whether AI answers name you. In our 30 questions, 2 of 87 pages ChatGPT cited ranked in Google's top 10.
Can I do AEO without a tool?
Yes, by hand. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google your buyers' questions, note who is named and which pages are cited, and repeat every week. That works for about five prompts. Past that, the counting takes longer than the fixing.
What is the best AEO platform?
It depends on which AI models you need and how many prompts. Cheapest paid plans ran from $29 to $599 a month on October 10, 2026, and only one of 14 tools included Claude on its cheapest plan. The comparison lists each plan's prompts, models and cost per answer.
Do I need separate pages for AEO and SEO?
Usually not. One page can rank and be cited if it answers the question in its first line and states facts other pages don't. What differs is which pages matter: AI answers lean on pricing, comparison and "best X" pages more than Google's top 10 does.
