ChatGPT citations: which sites ChatGPT cites, and how to get yours cited
ChatGPT citations are the source links ChatGPT shows next to an answer when it searches the web. Most go to a few big sites. Reddit led for a year, but since mid-August 2026 ChatGPT shows it far less: about 0.5% of citations, down from 3.8%. In 20 answers we recorded, 84% of links went to a brand the answer named.
Here to cite ChatGPT in an essay? You want APA Style's guide. This post is about the other kind: getting ChatGPT to cite your site.
What are ChatGPT citations?
When ChatGPT answers with web search, it runs one or more searches, reads some of the pages it finds, and writes the answer from them. The pages it used show up as source chips next to a sentence and in a list under the answer. Those links are its citations.
One OpenAI crawler decides whether your page can be one of them, according to OpenAI's crawler docs:
| Crawler | What it does | Needed to be cited? |
|---|---|---|
OAI-SearchBot | Crawls pages for ChatGPT's search results | Yes: block it and your pages aren't shown in ChatGPT search answers |
ChatGPT-User | Opens a page when a person's question needs it | No: OpenAI says it isn't used to decide what appears in search |
GPTBot | Collects pages to train future models | No: it's a separate setting |
Block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and ChatGPT can still name your brand from what it already knows, but it won't show your page as a source.
Which sites does ChatGPT cite most?
Across all topics, a handful of big sites take a large share. These are Ahrefs' figures for US queries, from its page The 50 Most-Cited Websites in ChatGPT, updated September 2, 2026. Ahrefs counts each site's share of the citations that went to the top 50 sites, not of every citation:
| Rank | Site | Share of top-50 citations |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | reddit.com | 16.8% |
| 2 | wikipedia.org | 7.0% |
| 3 | consumerreports.org | 3.7% |
| 4 | forbes.com | 3.1% |
| 5 | engineerfix.com | 2.8% |
| 6 | legalclarity.org | 2.8% |
| 7 | healthline.com | 2.5% |
| 8 | youtube.com | 2.5% |
| 9 | pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov | 2.4% |
| 10 | walmart.com | 2.3% |
Read Reddit's row with care. Ahrefs refreshes the page monthly and shows no change for Reddit, but trackers that log every citation in the ChatGPT app saw a cliff in August 2026. Promptwatch measured Reddit falling from 3.8% of ChatGPT citations to 0.5% within a week, as Semrush reported, and Elmo saw the app drop from 4.67% to 0.38%, the level OpenAI's API had shown all along. Nobody outside OpenAI has confirmed why. Trackers also sample different questions, which is why their percentages don't match.
For your business, the all-topics table matters less than the sites cited for your own buyers' questions. Those are rarely Wikipedia.
What we saw in 20 real ChatGPT answers
We track two products we also run: LaunchOnIt, a launch platform, and Leado, a Reddit lead-generation tool. On September 27 and 28, 2026, ChatGPT answered their 10 buyer questions (5 each, once a day, US), read from the chatgpt.com interface. That's 20 answers. It's a small sample from two niches, so read it as what happened there, not a law.
Picked, LaunchOnIt's questions across every AI model it tracks, as of September 29, 2026
| What we counted | Result |
|---|---|
| Answers with at least one link | 19 of 20 |
| Links in total | 146 |
| Different sites linked | 41 |
| Links to the site of a brand the answer named | 123 (84%) |
| Links to a page titled like a list ("best", "top", "alternatives", "vs") | 32 (22%) |
| Pages cited on September 27 and again on the 28th, same question | 32 of 69 (46%) |
| Pages that were also on Google's first page for the same question | 2 of 114 |
Three things stood out.
ChatGPT links the brands it names. When the answer recommended Product Hunt, it linked a Product Hunt page; when it named Reddit, it linked Reddit. Only 16% of links went to anyone else: review lists, blogs, forums. For a buyer question, the page most likely to be cited is the named brand's own page.

Half the sources change overnight. Same question, next day, and fewer than half of the pages came back. One screenshot tells you about one answer, not about how often you're cited.
Ranking on Google isn't the same thing. Of the 114 different pages ChatGPT cited, 2 were among Google's organic results on page one for the same question. The sites overlapped more: 34 of those pages came from a site that had some page in Google's results. ChatGPT runs its own searches, and they needn't match the question: for "where to find new ai tools launching every week" the one we could see was "new AI tools launching directory Product Hunt Futurepedia There's An AI For That". A Google ranking for the question doesn't carry over page for page.
How do I get my site cited by ChatGPT?
Nobody can promise a citation; the model decides per answer. These are the changes that give it a reason to pick your page.
- Let OpenAI's search crawler in. Allow
OAI-SearchBotinrobots.txt. You can blockGPTBot, the training crawler, and still be cited. - Get named first. In our answers, 84% of links went to brands the answer named. The route to a citation runs through being one of the options: listed on the review sites, directories and threads the model reads for your category.
- Give each buyer question a page of its own. A pricing page, a comparison, a "best X for Y" page. Put the answer in the first sentence, in words a model can quote whole.
- Write facts it can check. Prices, limits, dates, what's included. A page that says "flexible pricing" gives ChatGPT nothing to repeat.
- Be findable in a normal search. ChatGPT searches the web before it answers. A page that nothing links to and nothing indexes is hard for it to find, which is why most of this is still SEO with a different scoreboard.
When it won't work: if there's no page on the web that answers the question, or your product isn't one of the options people compare, ChatGPT has nothing of yours to cite. Build that first.
How do I check if ChatGPT cites my site?
Three ways, from free to tracked:
- Ask it. Open ChatGPT, turn on search, ask the question your buyers ask, and read the sources. Do it on more than one day before drawing conclusions.
- Read your server logs. A
ChatGPT-Userhit means someone asked ChatGPT a question just now and it opened your page to answer. That's a better signal than a training crawl. - Track it daily. An AI visibility tool like Picked asks your prompts every day and records which pages each answer cites, yours and your competitors'. To see where you stand first, run the free AI visibility checker.
How we checked
- Our answers: 20 ChatGPT answers, September 27 and 28, 2026, US, read from the chatgpt.com interface through DataForSEO. Links counted per answer; a site's subdomains counted as that site.
- Google overlap: the organic results on Google's US first page for each of the 10 questions (7 to 9 per page), fetched September 29, 2026, compared with every page ChatGPT cited for that question on either day, by exact URL.
- Other figures: Ahrefs' ranking as updated September 2, 2026; Semrush's report of Promptwatch's data, August 26, 2026; Elmo's comparison of the ChatGPT app and API, read September 29, 2026; OpenAI's crawler documentation, read September 29, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT cite Reddit so much?
It did, for a year: Reddit has a thread for almost every buyer question. Since mid-August 2026 it cites Reddit far less, and trackers saw its share fall from about 3.8% to 0.5% within a week. In our 20 late-September answers, ChatGPT linked Reddit threads only for questions about Reddit itself.
Does schema markup get you cited by ChatGPT?
There's no public evidence that schema alone gets a page cited. It helps search engines read your page, and ChatGPT searches the web before it answers. Start with a clear answer in the first sentence and facts it can check; add schema as normal SEO.
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
There's no fixed time. ChatGPT searches when a question needs it, so a new page can be cited once it's indexed and relevant. Our own data shows the sources change day to day, so measure over weeks, not after one answer.
How do I check the citations ChatGPT gives me?
Open each source it lists and check the page says what ChatGPT claims. Answers with web search link real pages, but the summary can still be wrong. Without web search, ChatGPT can invent sources that don't exist, so never copy one you haven't opened.
How do I cite ChatGPT itself in APA?
Credit OpenAI as the author, name the model version and the date, and link the shared chat if you have one. APA Style's guide has the exact format for the reference list and in-text citations.
