How to rank in ChatGPT: 7 steps, from what it actually cites

AlexFounder, Picked

To rank in ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) read your site, get your brand named on the pages ChatGPT reads for your category, and give each buyer question a page that answers it in the first sentence. There's no ranking to submit to: OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search.

What does "ranking in ChatGPT" mean?

There's no page two in ChatGPT. An answer either names you or it doesn't, and it either links your page or it doesn't. "Ranking" means two things, and they need different work:

Ranking in GoogleRanking in ChatGPT
What you winA position from 1 to 10Your brand named in the answer, your page in its sources
Who picksA ranking algorithm, for the words typedA model that runs its own searches, reads a few pages and writes one answer
How stableMoves over days and weeksThe same question can get a different answer on the next run
What you measurePosition, clicksThe share of answers that name you, and which pages they cite

The two are linked. In 20 ChatGPT answers we recorded in September 2026, 84% of the links went to the site of a brand the same answer named. Being named comes first; the citation tends to follow.

How does ChatGPT decide what to recommend?

ChatGPT answers from two places: what the model learned in training, and what it finds when it searches the web. For anything current, such as "best tool for X in 2026", it searches.

OpenAI describes the search part on its help page about searching the web: ChatGPT "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" and sends them to its search partners, then may send more specific ones after reading the first results. So your buyer types one question, and ChatGPT runs several searches you never see, reads a handful of pages, and writes one answer from them.

Two OpenAI bots matter here, and they do different jobs (OpenAI's crawler docs):

  • OAI-SearchBot builds the index ChatGPT search shows results from. Block it and your pages can't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • ChatGPT-User opens a page when someone's question needs it, right then. A hit from it in your logs means a person asked ChatGPT something and it read your page to answer.

GPTBot is the third one: it collects pages for training. You can block it and still appear in ChatGPT search.

What ChatGPT cites when you ask it this question

I asked ChatGPT "How do I rank in ChatGPT?" three times and "how to rank on chatgpt" twice, on October 6, 2026 (the chatgpt.com interface, US, web search on). Four of the five answers cited only OpenAI's own pages, mostly its help center. The fifth added Google's own documentation and one TechRadar article. Not one cited the SEO articles that rank on Google for the same search, Ahrefs and Neil Patel among them.

That's the most useful thing in this post. Asked how ChatGPT works, ChatGPT trusted the company that runs it, and Google's docs, over everyone writing about it. Asked about your product, it will look for the same thing: the primary source. That's step 6 below.

How to rank in ChatGPT: 7 steps

Nobody can promise a mention. The model decides per answer, and the answer changes. These steps give it a reason to pick you, in the order I'd do them.

1. Let OAI-SearchBot in

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check nothing blocks OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's publisher FAQ is plain about it: for your content to be included in ChatGPT's summaries and snippets, don't block that crawler. Check your firewall too. A Cloudflare rule that challenges "AI bots" can turn it away without anyone deciding to.

ChatGPT searches before it answers, so a page that nothing links to and nothing indexes is hard for it to find. The basics of SEO still apply: the page is indexed, it loads without JavaScript tricks, its title says what it is, other pages link to it. Our GEO vs SEO post shows where the two differ.

Ranking in Google doesn't carry over directly, though. For the same 10 questions, 2 of the 114 pages ChatGPT cited were on Google's US first page by exact URL. The searches ChatGPT runs aren't the words your buyer typed.

3. Get named on the pages it reads for your category

When a buyer asks "best X for Y", ChatGPT reads lists, directories, reviews and comparisons, then names the options they agree on. In our runs, 22% of ChatGPT's links went to pages titled like a list ("best", "top", "alternatives", "vs").

So find those pages. Ask ChatGPT your buyers' questions, open every source it cites, and note the ones that list your competitors and not you. Then do the unglamorous part: get listed in the directories, pitch the authors of the roundups with a real reason to include you, and keep your review profiles current. For a launch-platform category we track, four sites were named across four AI models in at least half the answers, Product Hunt in 83% of them. Those are the names every list repeats.

4. Give each buyer question its own page

"How much does X cost", "X vs Y", "best X for agencies": each deserves a page that answers it in the first sentence, in words a model can quote whole. ChatGPT's own advice, in every run, was the same: dedicated pages for specific questions beat one broad guide.

Write the answer before the context. "Plans start at $49 a month for 3 users" is quotable. "We offer flexible pricing for teams of every size" gives ChatGPT nothing to repeat.

5. Put facts on the page it can check

Prices, limits, dates, what's included, who it's for, what it doesn't do. Original numbers are better still: your own survey, your own benchmark, a count nobody else has. A model writing an answer needs a sentence to stand on, and a fact with a date is the easiest one to use.

Date your facts. "As of October 2026" tells both the reader and the model the number is current.

6. Be the primary source about yourself

This is the step the ChatGPT test points at. When the question is about you, your pricing, your limits, how you compare, make sure the best answer lives on your own site: a pricing page with real numbers, docs that a buyer can read without signing up, a comparison page that's fair to the other side.

7. Keep checking, because the sources move

ChatGPT's sources aren't fixed. For the same prompts, 32 of the 69 pages it cited one day were cited again the next. Fewer than half. A page can win a citation on Monday and lose it on Tuesday without anyone touching it.

That's why one check tells you little. Ask the same questions on several days and count how often you're named, which is the next section.

What doesn't help you rank in ChatGPT?

  • Old Reddit advice. Plenty of guides, written early in 2026, call Reddit ChatGPT's most cited site. Since mid-August 2026 its share of ChatGPT citations fell from about 3.8% to 0.5%, according to Promptwatch's data reported by Semrush. In our launch-platform answers ChatGPT linked Reddit twice in 80 links. Be useful on Reddit if your buyers are there, but don't build the plan on it.
  • llms.txt as the plan. It's a proposal, not something OpenAI says ChatGPT reads, and Google says its search doesn't use it. Add one if you like; it takes ten minutes.
  • Schema as a shortcut. There's no public evidence that structured data alone gets a page cited. Use it as normal SEO.
  • Volume. Fifty thin pages give ChatGPT fifty things it won't quote. One page with the facts beats them.
  • A guaranteed mention. Nobody controls what the model says. Anyone selling a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT's answers is guessing with your money.

How do I check where I rank in ChatGPT?

A ChatGPT screenshot is an anecdote, not a metric. The same prompt gives a different answer tomorrow, in another country, to a logged-in user. Three ways to get a real number, from free to tracked:

  1. Ask it, more than once. Write down the 10 questions your buyers ask. Ask each in ChatGPT with search on, 3 to 5 times over two or three days, and record whether you're named, in what position, and which pages it cites. That's the method in Aleyda Solis's AI search checklist.
  2. Read your server logs. Count ChatGPT-User hits per page. They're questions being answered with your page right now, a better signal than any training crawl. Our server integration splits them out for you.
  3. Track it on a schedule. An AI visibility tool asks your prompts on a schedule and turns the answers into a share you can report. Picked does it on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers, and shows the pages each answer cited instead of yours. To see where you stand first, run the free AI visibility checker.

Whichever you pick, measure before you change anything. Without a baseline you won't know which step moved the number.

When this won't work

If nobody has written about your category yet, there's nothing for ChatGPT to read, and no step here fixes that quickly. The same goes for a business whose buyers don't ask AI: a walk-in trade, a niche where everyone buys by phone. Classic local SEO pays better there. And if your product isn't one of the options people already compare, start with step 3. ChatGPT names what the web agrees on.

How we checked

  • ChatGPT's answer to this question: 5 runs on October 6, 2026, the chatgpt.com interface, US, web search on, read through cloro. Sources counted per answer.
  • Named vs cited, lists, day-to-day changes and Google overlap: 20 ChatGPT answers for 10 prompts in two niches (a launch platform and a Reddit lead-finding tool), September 27 and 28, 2026, US, 146 links; Google's US first page for the same questions fetched September 29, 2026. Small sample, two niches. Our ChatGPT citations post has the full breakdown.
  • Names across AI models: 40 answers for 5 launch-platform prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, September 27 and 28, 2026.
  • Google's top results: the US first page for "how to rank in chatgpt", October 6, 2026.
  • Other figures: OpenAI's help center and crawler docs, read October 6, 2026; Semrush's report of Promptwatch's data, August 26, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?

There's no fixed time. ChatGPT searches when a question needs it, so a new page can be cited once it's indexed and relevant to the searches ChatGPT runs. Being named takes longer, because it depends on other sites listing you. Measure over weeks, not after one answer.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

Not for a place in the answer. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and it offers no way to submit your site for a better spot. You can pay for the work that helps: listings, content, tracking. Nobody can sell you a guaranteed mention, because nobody controls what the model says.

Does ranking on Google help you rank in ChatGPT?

Indirectly. ChatGPT searches the web, so pages that are indexed and linked are easier for it to find. But for the same 10 questions, only 2 of the 114 pages ChatGPT cited were on Google's first page by exact URL. It runs its own searches and reads different pages.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from recommending me?

No. GPTBot collects pages for training. ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot, and live fetches come from ChatGPT-User. You can block GPTBot and still be shown and cited in ChatGPT search, as long as OAI-SearchBot can read your pages.

How do I rank higher in ChatGPT once I'm mentioned?

OpenAI doesn't publish how ChatGPT orders a list. What you can change is the input: get named on more of the pages it reads for that question, and make your own page the clearest answer to it. Then track your position across many answers, not one screenshot.

Is ranking in ChatGPT the same as GEO?

Mostly, yes. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the name for getting named and cited in AI answers, ChatGPT's included, and the work overlaps heavily with SEO. Our ChatGPT SEO guide covers what ChatGPT reads and where its sources come from.
