Picked asks ChatGPT your buyers' questions every day, in ChatGPT itself with web search on, and records whether each answer names your brand, in what place, and which pages it cites. Then it shows the brands ChatGPT named instead, and the people it sent to your site.

- **6.8** brands named per ChatGPT answer, on average
- **84%** of ChatGPT's links went to a brand the same answer named
- **2 of 114** pages ChatGPT cited were on Google's first page for the same question

20 ChatGPT answers for LaunchOnIt and Leado, two products we run, read from the chatgpt.com interface, US, September 27 and 28, 2026.

> Your Google rank tells you almost nothing about ChatGPT.

ChatGPT runs its own searches and reads its own pages. Of the 114 different pages it cited for our questions, 2 were on Google's first page for the same question. So a ChatGPT rank has to be measured in ChatGPT, every day.

## What does a ChatGPT rank tracker measure?

ChatGPT doesn't return ten blue links. It writes an answer, names a few brands, links the pages it read, and tomorrow's answer to the same question may name others. So a ChatGPT rank isn't one position: it's a set of numbers counted over many answers.

**Share of answers.** Out of all ChatGPT's answers to your prompts, the percentage that name you. The number to move and the one to report.

**Position.** Where ChatGPT names you among the brands in the answer: 1 is first, 3 means two brands came before you. Averaged over the answers that name you.

**Brands named instead.** Every brand ChatGPT names for your prompts, with its own share, so you see who holds the answers you're missing.

**Citations.** The pages ChatGPT links in each answer, the source chips and the list under it, whose they are, and whether yours is one of them.

**Trend.** Each number by day, or as a 7-day average, so one odd answer doesn't move the report.

## Why track ChatGPT itself and not the API?

Because the answer your buyers read and the answer an API call returns are different things. OpenAI says ChatGPT search "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries", sends them to search providers, and may send more specific ones after ([OpenAI, ChatGPT search](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search)). A plain API call to a model often searches nothing and answers from training.

Three more things change the answer, and a tracker has to hold them still:

| What changes the answer | What OpenAI says | What Picked does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The interface | ChatGPT searches the web and rewrites the question first | Reads the answer from the chatgpt.com interface, with search |
| Location | ChatGPT estimates a general location from the IP address | Asks every prompt from the US, in English |
| Memory | With memory on, saved memories may be used to rewrite the search | Asks the same way every day, never from your team's accounts, so your history doesn't steer it |
| Chance | The same question can get a different answer | Asks every day and reports a share over many answers |

If a tool won't tell you which interface and which location its "ChatGPT" numbers come from, ask in writing before you pay.

## What does ChatGPT name and cite?

We asked ChatGPT ten buyer questions for two products we run, LaunchOnIt (a launch platform) and Leado (a Reddit lead-generation tool), once a day on September 27 and 28, 2026, US, read from the chatgpt.com interface: 20 answers.

| What we counted | ChatGPT |
| --- | ---: |
| Brands named per answer | 6.8 |
| Links per answer | 7.3 |
| Links to the site of a brand the answer named | 123 of 146 (84%) |
| Links to pages titled like a list ("best", "top", "vs") | 32 of 146 (22%) |
| Pages cited on the 27th and again on the 28th, same question | 32 of 69 |
| Cited pages also on Google's first page for the same question | 2 of 114 |

What that means for tracking ChatGPT:

1. **Being named and being cited go together.** 84% of ChatGPT's links went to a brand the answer had named. In Gemini it was 42% ([our Gemini rank tracker](https://picked.so/gemini-rank-tracker) has those numbers). So in ChatGPT, the brands named instead are also the sites getting the clicks.
2. **One check is a coin toss.** Fewer than half the pages ChatGPT cited one day came back the next. A rank read once a week misses most of what happens.
3. **A Google rank tracker can't stand in.** 2 of the 114 pages ChatGPT cited were on Google's first page for the same question. You need ChatGPT's own answers.

Twenty answers from two niches is a small sample. Read it as a pattern to check against your own prompts.

**Sources**: LaunchOnIt's answers on ChatGPT, 10 answers, 80 links from 27 sites.

| Site | Page | Times cited |
| --- | --- | ---: |
| producthunt.com | Product Hunt – The best new products in tech. | 17 |
| indiehackers.com | How indie hackers should launch products in 2026? | 6 |
| news.ycombinator.com | Hacker News | 5 |
| betalist.com | BetaList | 4 |
| futurepedia.io | Futurepedia newsletter | 4 |

## How does Picked track ChatGPT?

1. **Add your prompts.** The questions your buyers ask before they know your name, like "best CRM for a small agency". Picked suggests some from your site and competitors when you start.
2. **Keep ChatGPT as one of your AI models.** Each plan includes 2, 3 or 4 of the six, chosen by you, and ChatGPT is first in every plan's default set.
3. **Picked asks every day.** Each prompt goes to ChatGPT again every day, with web search, and the answer is stored as ChatGPT gave it.
4. **The answer is read for brands and links.** Picked records each brand named, in order, and every page cited, and matches them to you and the competitors you track.
5. **You see the rank.** Share of answers, position, the brands named instead and the pages cited, per prompt and over time, next to the same prompts on your other AI models.

When a prompt shows you missing, Picked lists the pages ChatGPT cited instead, drafts the pitch to get you listed on them, and on Growth and Scale writes the article for that prompt as a pull request on your site. The [AI rank tracker page](https://picked.so/ai-rank-tracker) shows the same numbers across every model.

## Can you see the people ChatGPT sends you?

Yes, if you connect your site. A rank says ChatGPT named you; a visit says someone acted on it. Picked counts both sides:

**Visits from ChatGPT answers.** ChatGPT adds `utm_source=chatgpt.com` to the links under an answer, and OpenAI says so in its [publisher FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq). Picked counts those visits per page, with no IP stored, from a Vercel log drain or a snippet on your server (from Cloudflare only on plans that share referrers). Some links inside answers carry no referrer at all, so part of ChatGPT's traffic still lands in "Direct".

**ChatGPT reading your pages.** `OAI-SearchBot` crawls for ChatGPT's search, and `ChatGPT-User` opens a page when a person's question needs it. Picked counts both by page, from Cloudflare, a Vercel log drain or a snippet on your server, and checks pushed hits against the IP ranges OpenAI publishes.

A page ChatGPT keeps opening but never cites is the first one to rewrite.

## What should you check before tracking ChatGPT?

**`OAI-SearchBot` isn't blocked.** OpenAI says it's what decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT's search answers, and that you should allow it to be eligible ([OpenAI's crawler docs](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots)). Check `robots.txt` and your CDN's "block AI bots" setting: a rule that blocks every AI bot blocks this one too. You can block `GPTBot`, OpenAI's training crawler, and still be cited.

**Your prompts don't name you.** "Is Acme any good" tells you what ChatGPT thinks of Acme. "Best time tracker for agencies" tells you whether it thinks of Acme at all. Track the second kind.

Our [ChatGPT SEO guide](https://picked.so/chatgpt-seo) covers what to change once you have the numbers.

## When a ChatGPT rank tracker won't help

**Your buyers don't ask ChatGPT.** Ask a few customers how they found you before you track anything.

**You sell outside the US.** Picked asks ChatGPT from the US, in English. If your buyers are in another country, ChatGPT may name other brands for them.

**You want a guarantee.** Nobody can promise what ChatGPT says tomorrow. Picked shows where you're missing and which pages ChatGPT read instead.

**You want one screenshot.** Ask ChatGPT yourself, it's free. A tracker is for asking every day and acting on the rate.

## How we checked

**ChatGPT's answers.** LaunchOnIt and Leado, ten buyer questions, 20 answers read from the chatgpt.com interface through DataForSEO, US, September 27 and 28, 2026. Google's first page for the same ten questions fetched September 29, 2026.

**Gemini's share of links to named brands.** LaunchOnIt, the same days, 10 answers from the Gemini interface.

**What's built.** the product as of October 28, 2026. Nothing on this page is planned.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a ChatGPT rank tracker?

A tool that asks ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and records whether each answer names your brand, in what position, and which pages it cites. Because ChatGPT's answers change from one asking to the next, it reports a share over many answers, not one position.

### Is there a number one ranking in ChatGPT?

Not a fixed one. ChatGPT names several brands per answer, 6.8 on average in our answers, and the order changes between askings. The useful numbers are how often you're named at all and where you usually appear when you are, both counted over days.

### How often does Picked check ChatGPT?

Every day. Each prompt is asked again in ChatGPT daily, with web search on, and the dashboard shows each day and a 7-day average, so you see the trend rather than one answer.

### Which plans include ChatGPT?

Every plan. Each includes 2, 3 or 4 of the six AI models, chosen by you, and ChatGPT is in every plan's default set. Starter starts with ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. The [pricing page](https://picked.so/pricing) shows what else each plan includes.

### Can I check my ChatGPT rank for free?

Yes, once. Picked's [free AI visibility check](https://picked.so/free-ai-visibility-checker) asks ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews two of your buyers' questions and shows who they name and which pages they cite. By hand: ask ChatGPT the same questions on several days and note who's named and what's linked.

### Does ranking on Google help you rank in ChatGPT?

Less than you'd think. ChatGPT runs its own searches and reads its own pages: only 2 of the 114 pages it cited for our questions were on Google's first page for the same question. Google SEO keeps your pages findable; being on the lists and reviews ChatGPT reads is what gets you named.
